I use 4 different models on a regular basis; with the subscription method I’d be spending $80/mo, but my API spend rarely exceeds $20/mo. And I have all of the models available in the same place, with the same notes, at the same time.

Even though you’d be running the model and not actively training them, they still require an incredible amount of GPU memory.

In order to get our AI companions online, we have to create what’s called an API Key. This is essentially a password that we can use in our AI-enabled apps to send data to the models and securely retrieve the responses. Setting up accounts for these AI models will follow a similar pattern, so we’ll focus on our favorite: Anthropic Claude. Most of these API accounts do require a credit card and a minimum payment of typically $5 to get started. However, Google’s Gemini has a limited free tier if you want to test it out before committing.
